Dr. Karen Beemon, Chair of Biology, has been awarded the 2007 Retrovirology Prize for her research on avian retroviral gene expression and oncogenesis.

Dave Martinelli won the 1st and Jill Weyers - the 2nd prizes at the poster competition at a major
international meeting of the Developmental Biology Societies of North America, Latin America and Mexico
(plus others from around the world). Nicole Crnkovich was selected for a talk at the meeting.

Maria Matos, Hattar Lab has been awarded an NRSA grant for three years for her project titled,
‘Retinal photoreceptors in the non-image visual system’. Congratulations to Maria and Samer!
Elissa Lei, a postdoctoral fellow in the Corces lab, has accepted a faculty position
as a tenure-track Investigator in the Laboratory of Cellular and Developmental Biology at the
National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), NIH. Elissa will be
leaving us for the NIH in Bethesda at the end of August.

Tiara Booker is another new Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellow. Administered by
the National Research Council (NRC) under a grant from the Ford Foundation, this fellowship provides
three years of support with an annual stipend. Congratulations Tiara!
Mark Teaford, a Professor in the Center for Functional Anatomy & Evolution at the School of Medicine
and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Biology received The Professors' Award for Excellence in
Teaching at the Med School Commencement last month.

Sophomore research assistant Hanano Watanabe of the Integrated Imaging Center is the recipient of a
2006 Summer Provost's Undergraduate Research Award for her proposal entitled “Examination of
EGF Receptor Clustering in A431 Cells: A Molecular Approach and Analysis using Forster Resonance Energy
Transfer (FRET) and Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM). Many congratulations
to Hanano, as well as Ned Perkins who will advise and assist Hanano in this most interesting
correlative approach in evaluating the efficacy of utilizing ESEM as a tool for analyzing protein distribution in membranes.
